Read on the next section of the book, on rectilinear motion and differential equations. This section will
not be discussed in class, since most the concepts here were already discussed in class. However, some
questions from this section will appear in the next activity and in the exam. So please study the section.
As for rectilinear motion, you’ve been taught that the derivative of the displacement function, is the
velocity function and the derivative of the velocity function is the acceleration function. So given the
acceleration function, the velocity is just the antiderivative of the velocity function. Similarly, the
antiderivative of the velocity function is the displacement function. So as an exercise, also do the
following.
Derive one of the kinematic equations, . Assume that the acceleration is a constant, , and the initial
velocity is , while the initial displacement is . Then use this formula to solve the following.
A stone is thrown vertically upward from the top of a house 60ft above the ground with an initial speed
of 40ft/s. The acceleration due to gravity is -32ft/s2.
a. How long will it take the stone to reach the greatest height?
b. What is the maximum height?
c. How long will it take to stone to pass the top of the house on its way down?
d. What is its velocity at the instant it passes the top of the house?
e. How long will it take for the stone to reach the ground?
f. What is its speed when as it touches the ground?
Please prepare for an activity on Monday/Tuesday. Bring a blindfold or bandana or anything that could
go around your head to cover your eyes. If you can bring more than one, that would be better. Have a
